Renee Palmer stared across her desk to the seat opposite where Liam was currently sprawled. A completely irrational thought crossed her mind just then. He sprawls in a seat like any teenage boy would. Should I tell him? Nah, I've got a much better way to tease him and make him loosen up.

Liam squirmed under Renee's steady gaze and cursed quietly as he felt his cheeks start to flush in embarrassment. God, could this get any worse? That was when he noticed the speculative gleam in her eyes as she said, "You've really never done it?"

Resigned to the inevitable; he nodded. He could almost hear the wheels turning in her devious mind. She turned the topic of the conversation back to the latest of the Co-Ventures and Liam gave this up as a lost cause. Renee wasn't going to let him in on her plan until it was too late for him to get out of it.

Later that day, a very self-satisfied Renee Palmer ended the most enjoyable conversation she had ever had with Zo'or. The Synod leader had been happy to agree to her request; the Taelons needed all the goodwill they could generate nowadays. He had ended their conversation with a faint smile on his face and Renee had had to fight to restrain her mirth. Sandoval was in for a bit of a shock too.

The next day, a reluctant and extremely nervous pair of Protectors entered Renee's office. They were like a pair of naughty schoolboys being sent to the principal's office.

Renee greeted them with a smile and pointed at two ominously wrapped boxes, saying, "There you are, gentlemen. They've been made to measure. Do not open them before the day of the party and I expect you both to be on your best behaviour. Clear?"

Sandoval glared at her and Liam murmured a meek, "Yes, Renee."

They picked up their packages and headed out. Once she was sure they were gone, Renee collapsed back in her seat and let loose her laughter. This was going to be fun!

The night of the party arrived soon enough. A furiously blushing Liam made his way down the corridors of the Embassy doing his best to rise above the giggles and stares. A wolf-whistle made him hesitate in mid step but he took a deep breath and continued on his way.

He entered the huge conference chamber that had been chosen as the location of the party and scanned around. His eyes passed over something. No. She wouldn't have. Who was he kidding?! He made his way over to Sandoval and maneuvered around the group of adoring young girls that had cornered the other man.

Sandoval greeted his arrival with a mixture of emotions. Relief at the rescue and disbelief at the costume Kincaid was wearing. Renee Palmer had a warped imagination. Sighing, he accepted that there was no getting out of this; it was for a good cause, he might as well relax and enjoy it.

He made a courtly bow that made a couple of the older girls sigh dreamily. Fighting laughter, he said, "Greetings on this All Hallow's Eve, Sir Galahad."

Kincaid played along. "Greetings, Sir Lancelot. Pray introduce me to this bevy of young beauties that surround you."

The girls giggled furiously.

From the other side of the room - so far unnoticed by the pair - Renee Palmer watched and smiled. Her costume of a traditional fairy godmother had been like a magnet for the younger kids at the party.

The local youth groups had been approached about holding their traditional Halloween get together at the Embassy and had jumped at the chance. Renee's promise to get the Protectors and Volunteers to dress up and supervise had been to good an opportunity to miss. There was a media presence here but she'd save that surprise for Liam and Sandoval for later.

A little boy of about eight tugged at the long sleeve of her dress. She looked down at him inquiringly. He was missing a front tooth and he looked absolutely adorable as Robin Hood. He pointed seriously at her wand and said, "Is that really a magic wand?"

Renee crouched down and smiled. This wand was made of the nano-technology that Doors International had developed as part of the Co-Ventures program. It was programmed to transform into a variety of different things in answer to just such a question.

"Well, let's see, shall we?"
